Environmental and Ethical Policy 2009-10 

Students’ Association University of the West of Scotland (SAUWS) recognises the impact that its actions have upon the environment. SAUWS are committed to considering the environmental and ethical implications of all of our actions, and are also committed to continually improving our environmental and ethical performance.  

1. Students, staff and the wider community 

SAUWS will;

  • Promote greater awareness of environmental and ethical issues and responsibilities to staff, students, and the wider community.
  • Encourage staff and students to engage in promoting and implementing environmental and ethical issues.
 

2. Utility Consumption 

SAUWS is committed to reducing its utility consumption. This aim will be achieved by the following;

  • Promoting energy and water conservation to students and staff.
  • Continually developing a more efficient building.
  • The following purchasing restrictions apply;

                                - No CRT monitors will be purchased.

                                - Energy efficient light bulbs will be purchased where ever possible.

3. Waste generation and management 

SAUWS is committed to continually reducing the volume of waste it produces and will aim to recycle or reuse waste wherever possible. As part of this commitment, SAUWS will aim to;

  • Ensure legal compliance on all waste disposal, and adhere to all relevant duties of care.
  • Minimise waste production.
  • Recycle or reuse as high a proportion of waste as possible.
  • Increasingly use recyclable and recycled materials throughout its building, as far as is commercially viable.
 

4. Fairtrade 

SAUWS are committed to promoting, supporting and using Fairtrade. The following action shall be taken in respect to Fairtrade;

  • Promotion of Fairtrade, particularly during the annual Fairtrade Fortnight.
  • Ensuring Fairtrade products are sold in SAUWS shops, bars and cafes wherever commercially viable.
  • Information on Fairtrade and Fairtrade developments on the Students’ Union website.

5. Implementation 

SAUWS is committed to the maintenance of this policy. This shall be done by reviewing the policy annually.

SAUWS shall promote its Environmental and Ethical Policy to students and staff by the following means;

  • Ensuring that SAUWS Environmental and Ethical policy is available on the SAUWS website.
  • Staff handouts will include an Environmental and Ethical statement.
  • Make all new employees aware of the Environmental and Ethical Policy.
