► Why Should I Stand?

Becoming a Trustee, especially a sabbatical, can be an incredibly worthwhile experience. You will have the opportunity to learn many new skills and to apply them in real situations. You will gain experience of the management of the Union, giving insight into charity law, licensing legislation, staff management, marketing and promotions, entertainments, customer service - and that’s just for starters!

You will be representing students at every level of the University structure and will be able to participate in meetings with senior management. You will regularly engage with external bodies, including the National Union of Students and Scottish Government as you campaign on issues which affect student education and welfare.

If any of this sounds daunting, fear not, you won’t be left to do it all on your own! Full time staff members of SAUWS are there to advise you and introduce you to the structures and procedures. You will also receive training from NUS, members of the UWS support staff, and comprehensive handovers from the outgoing office bearers. During your time in office you will develop your skills in the areas of leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving, presentation, motivating others, as well as expertise in public speaking, political representation, budget management and strategic planning.

Being a Trustee can really boost any student’s professionalism and career prospects. It is fairly common for students who get involved in their Student Associations / Unions to go from being an ordinary trustee to sabbatical to NUS officer and to end up with a high profile career in politics or other area within the public eye. It can be a fantastic launch pad.
