Jack Straw, President at Leeds in the late sixties, went on to serve on the NUS executive, and was NUS President between 1969 and 1971—is now Justice Secretary, but has also been Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary
Tommy Sheppard, was an officer at Aberdeen Uni before serving as NUS VP Education 1982- 1984—after various jobs in local councils and journalism, became Assistant General Sec retary of the Scottish Labour Party, now runs the STAND comedy club
Ed Byrne, was on the Executive Committee at Strathclyde in the early 1990’s, serving as Social Con vener and then Vice President Internal—now a successful comedian
Ricky Gervais, worked at one time as entertainments staff at University of London Union
Jack McConnell, former Depute President of NUS Scotland– his advisors included Derek Munn,    former President of NUS Scotland (now Head of Policy at Stonewall UK), Douglas Trainer (former President of both NUS Scotland and then NUS) and Rachel McEwan (former Depute President of NUS Scotland)
Trevor Phillips, former President of Imperial College London and then first black President of NUS in 1978—now head of the Commission for Equalities and Human Rights
David Aaronovitch, a former student activist at Manchester Uni, held various posts within NUS   before becoming President 1980-82—now a journalist, commentator and broadcaster
