For anyone that does not know who I am, I am Lauren Miller the Depute President for Education and Welfare at SAUWS for the year 2014/15. Everything is very exciting at the moment with the organisation of campaigns and events for the next couple months in preparation for all the students coming back to UWS. I would just like to let everyone know what I have been doing for the last month and what is planned for the next year, so..
First of all I have been organising a volunteer fair for UWS, so far I have contacted a number of organisations to come along and speak to students. Gill McKenzie, the citizenship coordinator at SAUWS has also been working on this with me and we are now working towards this happening at every campus with the help of our campus presidents. This event will take place on the 19th of September so come along and find an organisation that you are interested in!
Following this I have been organising two campaigns for the next year; MIND your health and UWS Goes Global. I will keep everyone updated on these two events throughout the year through twitter @dpewsauws and by keeping up to date with my blog posts. the idea behind the MIND your health campaign is to raise mental health awareness and to reduce stigma surrounding mental health. Throughout the year I hope to set up a de stress festival for students to relax before exams, hold a get wet month (water challenge, swimming ideas) alongside the sports president Ryan Wood and to organise a procrastination workshop. There’s are just a few ideas however there are many more planned, get in touch if interested either through twitter or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. The UWS Goes Global campaign is surrounding internationalisation, this year I want to promote ERASMUS opportunities and fixing international fees. On top of this I want to create language coffee mornings so that students can connect with others and if they want to go on ERASMUS this would be a perfect opportunity to learn a language for going abroad.
Throughout the past month I have also been looking at promoting student course reps, getting electronic books in the library and making learning more inclusive. I have also looked into organising a breast cancer awareness event at the union.
This is just a small number of things I have been working on, I hope that at least one of these events interests you as students and hopefully you want to get involved. So far everything I have looked to implement over the next year is achievable and hopefully you, the students will recognise the changes!
So that is all for me just now, I just wanted to say a quick hello and to let you all know what I have planned for the next few months. I would like to say good luck to anyone sitting a resit in the next few weeks and I will see you all in September!
