Role Description

We have an opportunity for one student to take up the role as Lead Volunteer for our Freshers Team. This is a six week placement where you will lead the recruitment, training and support of the 2019 Freshers Volunteer team.

Our Freshers Team are the students who will be there to welcome our new and returning students during freshers week. Our volunteers are the key to making sure students enjoy a memorable freshers week.

Working alongside the Student Opportunities Coordinator, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Coordinate the recruitment process for assembling our volunteer team
  • Match volunteers to roles and create the volunteering rota
  • Plan and deliver volunteer induction sessions
  • Supervise and support volunteers during our freshers events
  • Plan the volunteers party at the end of the freshers period
  • Work in partnership with Students’ Association staff, student societies and UWS staff to support the development and promotion of freshers events and activities

(During these two weeks we are supporting RE:FRESH, a Youth Arts Festival being held in Paisley. There may be the possibilty for you to support the volunteer team for the festival as part of this role.)

 

About this organisation

The UWS Students’ Association (Your Union) are here to support you in lots of ways during your time at University. 

We are responsible for promoting the social, cultural and political activities of UWS students at each of our campuses, as well as providing a fair and independent voice for students. We are led by students for students - each year students elect Sabbatical Officers who make up part of the Board of Trustees. This Board is responsible for ensuring the viability and sustainability of the Association. In addition, students also elect the Executive Committee who are your representatives for the year.

Where?

Our main office is in Paisley but your working location can be flexible to suit you.

You need to be able to attend our Ayr, Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses on specific days between 19th - 21st August and 2nd - 13th September.

Travel expenses will be covered.

Skills/Experience Required

The aim of this role is to provide you the opportunity to develop your skills and experience, so the most important thing is that you’re:

  • Enthusiastic
  • Eager to learn new things
  • Happy working in a team

However, to gain the most from this role it will be beneficial if you have experience in some of these areas:

  • Supporting students
  • Working with volunteers
  • Planning and delivering events
  • Communicating with a wide range of people
  • Use of various IT and social media
  • Involvement in Students’ Association activities

 

Requirements for starting the role

To be eligible for this role you need to be:

  • A current UWS student
  • Available to volunteer for a minimum of 6 hours per week from 1st August – 13th September
  • The days, times and location of your volunteering can be flexible but you need to be able to attend Ayr, Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses on specific days between 19th - 21st August and 2nd - 13th September. Travel expenses will be covered.
