SAUWS Constitution Referendum 2018 - RESULTS

The results of the referendum to introduce a new Constitution are as follows:

Total number of votes cast - 123

Votes For - 104

Votes Against - 16

Abstentions - 3

The changes in a nutshell

The Students’ Association is becoming a Company – this will mean that we exist as an organisation, not just in the names of the trustees (which was the case with the old constitution).

The new constitution (read here  updated - 21/09/18) takes on most of the clauses of old one (read here) but there are some changes to improve students’ access to democracy and the trustees:

  • A reduction in the number of students who need to sign a petition to call a referendum - down from 5% of students (800) to 150
  • A reduction in the number of students who need to vote in a referendum to make policy – down from 5% to 3%
  • Renaming of Student Voice to Student Council
  • Greater accountability of the Trustees to the student members, including an annual meeting and quarterly reporting to Student Council
