Introducing Heather

Hello! My name is Heather and I am your Senior Student Representative and President of Societies and Citizenship for 16/17.

Prior to becoming one of your sabbatical officers I studied BA(Hons) Politics and Sociology at the University and was an active volunteer in our Students' Association and the National Union of Students in Scotland.

In 2014 I won the award of ‘Activist of the Year’ at the SAUWS Awards for my work with the Women’s group and in 2016 was awarded a Strategic level Volunteer Recognition Award from UWS for my role as Disabled Students’ Officer in NUS Scotland. Both of which I would never have achieved without the support and opportunities given to me by SAUWS and by coming to study at UWS.

I am completely honoured to be the first women elected to lead SAUWS and hope to inspire others to follow.

Heather's Objectives

Over the next year I hope to create more opportunities for UWS students to get involved with SAUWS and in their local communities. As well as trying to make both SAUWS and UWS a welcoming place for all who study at any of our campuses.

I hope to achieve these objectives by:

  • Increasing society memberships in 16/17
  • Introduction of more academic societies
  • Introduction of a SAUWS Societies constitution and executive committee
  • Introduce RAG (Raising and Giving) week
  • Work to improve the student experience for international students at UWS
